I’ve got Joost invites

Joost continues to be very smart to create buzz around its launch. After the Private Beta comes the Public Beta, before a full launch anytime soon. Anyway, I have invites now, so if you want one, drop me a note.

    Hey Olivier,
Hope all’s well. I was just curious…I’m doing my own little survey of people who are giving away Jooost invites. What do you actually think of Joost? I’m only asking because it didn’t do that much for me, so I find it curious that so many people feel inspired and motivated to promote and inherently endorse the new video service by giving away invites. It could be that all these other people think the service is great…but it just hasn’t done anything much for me. Or maybe they’re falling victim to empowerment by having something to supposedly give away early. I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of that. Just curious.
    Cheers,
    Max

    Max,

You always have the best questions… It turns out someone just asked me for a Joost invite a couple of hours ago, and, as I logged in to send the invite, I found all those cool widgets Joost has prepared to make their launch even more viral.

Now, did Joost do anything to me? Not really. Joost is almost an empty shell right now with little content of interest to me. More imprtantly, I already have Netflix and digital cable with a DVR that give me much more \\\”on-demand\\\” control and video quality than Joost. However, I still have to pay a $60 monthly cable subscription to Time Warner Cable to have the privilege to watch advertising-sponsored TV channels (I have to pay extra if I want HBO and others…), $20 to Netflix… This works for me now, but once free distribution platforms emerge, I can\\\’t believe they are not going to be disruptive.

Joost works and is free. As a pure TV distribution channel, it could compete with basic cable once it has more content. Give it a few years and it will play in HD. I have not been impressed by its interactive features yet, but I trust that many developpers are already preparing their widgets to make it a more interactive experience to \\\”Joost\\\”.

Finally, for me the hidden potential of Joost is its potential ability to track viewers\\\’ attention metadata, which could unleash an illimited number of applications, from recommendation engines, targeted relevant advertising, accurate measurements etc. And all of this is very exciting for us marketers…

What about you, Max - what do you think of all this?

Oh, and BTW, congratulations on the Nielsen acquisition.
