The first day of the Conference started with a keynote speech from Dr Don Dillman, Professor at Washington State University. Don has been a pioneer in most new types of research methodology, from modern mail, telephone to Internet survey, so his opinion about the future of online research provided an interesting perspective. He addressed the different challenges that online research, like other methodologies before, is now facing. As his current interest is multi-mode data collection, he provided different insights about the difference between data collection modes, and insisted on the importance of survey design on the quality and comparability of data. Reassuring, he made the point that online panel-based research is new, and would evolve over time, requiring a lot of research on research.
